A Holy Home

As you may have seen from our recent posts (or maybe from our spotty presence on social media), we recently moved. We bought a little fixer upper in Gainesville, Virginia that was built in the 1960s. We fell in love with its sweet charm and gorgeous yard, but there were a few things that worried us about buying an old home. Even more so than the many projects that awaited us when we were handed the keys, we were concerned about the people who had lived in the house before us and what the walls of our new home had seen.

You see, we firmly believe in the sacredness of home. We believe that a home is a place where Christ dwells within a family, where guardian angels abide, and where, hopefully, holiness begins. And, although the most important thing about a home is the people who live in it, we believe that the physical place, and it’s dedication to God, matter too.

On the very day we pulled up with our two littles buckled into their carseats in the front seat of our moving truck, we had our house blessed. We were thrilled to be able to have a priest from our parish bless our new home before we ever slept in it, and even more ecstatic to use the traditional home blessing - the one that was in use before the Rituale Romanum (Roman Ritual) was changed during the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.

The rite was beautiful; our priest blessed each room with holy water, all the way down to closets, bathrooms, and even the attic as he said the ancient Latin prayers that consecrated our home to Christ and drove out any demonic presence or influence. He also blessed a large jug of water, for us to continue to use holy water around our house, and a canister of salt. Jake sprinkled the blessed salt around our house, in our gardens, and especially at the four corners of our new home.

As part of our mission at Pillar & Pearl, we hope to inspire faithful individuals and families to integrate Catholicism more fully into their daily lives. We wanted to write this blog to remind people that God wants to offer His graces in so many ways, but we have to be open to asking for them! Throughout all of salvation history, God has handed blessings down through families. He promised Abraham that he would bless his many descendants, He passed blessings through Isaac on to Jacob, and He continued to do this throughout the Scriptures. God offered his protection to a family or group of people and He followed through on His promises even when the people failed.

One of the most important blessings in your life is the blessing of your house. Your home is where you will live and grow as a family, where your kids will be formed in the Faith, and so much more. We encourage you to have your home blessed, to obtain some holy water and blessed salt, and to use them daily. We placed our holy water in a beautiful, amber glass bottle made by Reliquary Supply, and Jake uses it every night to bless our children. This blessing will bind any evil spirits, keep the children close to Our Lord, and be handed on to our children and their children for generations to come until Christ makes His glorious return. Finally, we encourage you to pray the daily prayers of the Auxilium Christianorum which will work powerfully in tandem with the use of holy water and blessed salt to protect your home from all evil and turn it over to Christ’s Kingship. One of these beautiful prayers powerfully binds evil spirits and protects your family from them; it would be an excellent practice to say these binding prayers along with your nightly blessing!

“Send forth thy holy legions, we humbly beseech thee, that under thy command and by thy power they may pursue the evil spirits, counter them on every side, resist their bold attacks and drive them far from us, harming no one on the way, binding them to the foot of the Cross to be judged and sentenced by Jesus Christ Thy Son and to be disposed of by Him as He wills.”
